So far as the maintenance goes, it is no great burden each. The pump recirculates the water and mother nature normally offers for the extra water that needs to be added to the pond to beat evaporation. While the elimination of the pump within the winter time might be not important as the temperature solely falls below freezing occasionally and sometimes stays under the freezing mark, I take away it any approach just to make sure.
